Hey, just wanted to let the world know that I’m currently attempting to coordinate an interprovincial move with my girlfriend, as well as an extended vacation (approximately 3 to 4 weeks). I’ll have my netbook with me during this time, so I won’t be totally off the grid, but just be aware that I’m busy as hell and don’t always have time to reply to every email immediately.

I had a bit of time today to scan the 5×7 prints that I shot with my Burke & James Rembrandt a couple weeks ago. I put up a new gallery for the scans. The photos were created by loading Ilford MG IV paper (not negs) directly into the camera. Because of this, all the images are mirrored left-right and inverted dark-light. Because Ilford MG IV paper is estimated to have an ISO rating of 6, I metered the scene with my Nikon D200 and then compensated for the low ISO in my head.

I had so much fun taking these photos! There’s a certain thrill to developing photos by hand in your bathroom that’s totally lacking from the modern digital workflow that we’ve all become accustomed to.

I have a couple more yet to scan, so check back tomorrow for those as well.

Today, I spent at least three hours trudging through snow with my Rembrandt. I only have five holsters for the thing, which means all that effort was just to take ten pictures. I’ve got my fingers crossed that any of them even turn out! Hopefully there’ll be enough time to develop these tomorrow, sometime between picking my girlfriend up from the Greyhound station and cooking her dinner.

On a completely unrelated note, my enthusiasm for the new jekyll blagging system was so great that I decided to write a plugin that automates the creation of the image galleries on this site. In the process, I created something that is more than just a tool to publish stylish image galleries, but is more generally useful for automatically creating lists of any type of file. It can come in handy if you have a frequently changing list of downloads on your website. You can see the result of that work at my private jekyll fork and also read about my efforts to have this included in the next version of jekyll. Maybe you should try it out! You could even let me know what you think about it, what you liked, what you’d change, etc. Cheers!

Exolucere.ca blag is now live, meaning that I have now officially entered the 20th century. I have a historically poor track record of keeping blogs up to date, but I thought I’d take another stab at it today. What inspired this maniacal endeavour? Well, I’ve been a user of github for a while now, but I only just discovered jekyll yesterday, a static-html-rendering template system written in Ruby, and I am already madly in love with it. Seriously, check it out. Feels good, man.

What kinds of things do I intend to write about here? I don’t know yet. I suppose I could discuss the progress of the application I’m developing or perhaps various photo-taking adventures that I’m known to undertake from time to time. I am also planning a bicycle trip across a large portion of Canada for this summer, and I hope to be able to document my travels here as I go.

Smell you later!
